Mercy Hospital GEM Center
Project type
Medical Building, Master Plan
Date
May 2020
Location
Chicago, Illinois
Located in the Bronzeville Neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago, this redesign of Mercy Hospital into the General Emergency Medical Center, or GEM Center, focusses on patient experience. In particular, the upper inpatient areas are located in a diamond shaped tower that emphasizes natural light, color therapeutic treatment, patient-staff interaction, views both to nature and the city, and efficient circulation both in and out of hospital spaces. Aside from bed tower design, site planning was designed holistically to take best advantage of sun paths, vehicle circulation, and mitigating flooding on the site.
